It arrives as a customer saying the tile looked warmer in the shop, or a brand head asking why the same stock moves in one branch and sits in another. Most of the time the answer is above everyone&#8217;s head. Showroom lighting design is not styling laid over a finished fit-out. It is the thing that decides whether a customer can actually see what you paid to stock.<\/p>\n<p>Good showroom lighting design is built on what the Indian codes actually say, not on lighting trends. India has a published code of practice for interior illumination with real numbers in it. Almost nobody writing about showrooms quotes it. We will, and we will be honest about where the code stops and judgement starts.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-showroom-lighting-has-to-do-before-it-looks-good\">What showroom lighting has to do before it looks good<\/h2>\n<div class=\"answer\">\n<p><strong>Showroom lighting has three jobs. Put enough light on the product for a customer to judge it. Show colour honestly, so what sells in the shop is what looks right at home. And hold enough contrast that the eye lands on stock rather than on a bright ceiling. Everything after that is styling.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Showroom lighting design starts from a fact that is easy to state and easy to forget: a showroom is not an office and it is not a warehouse. In an office the task is on a desk, so you light the desk. In a showroom the task moves, because the customer moves, and the thing being judged is usually vertical: a wall of tiles, a rail of clothes, a stack of laminate samples. That single difference undoes most lighting layouts. A grid of downlights spaced evenly across a ceiling lights the floor beautifully and leaves the merchandise on the walls in shadow. The room measures fine on a lux meter (lux measures how much light lands on a surface) at waist height and still fails, because nobody buys the floor. Good <a href=\"https:\/\/simfyrelive.in\/commercial-showrooms\">showroom design and fit-out work<\/a> starts by asking where the product will actually sit, at what height, and in what direction the customer will be facing when they decide.<\/p>\n<p>The second job, honest colour, is the one that generates refunds. A light source can be bright and still lie about colour. That is a measurable property, not an opinion, and there is a standard for it.<\/p>\n<p>The third job, contrast, is where most spending is wasted. Owners buy more fittings to make a room feel brighter. Past a point, extra light makes a showroom flatter, because contrast is a ratio, not a quantity. Shopping arcades sit lower at 100 to 200 lux, and corridors lower again.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of Indian Standards writes its illuminance recommendations as three numbers rather than one. For shops with counters and for showrooms displaying large objects, that band runs 300 to 500 to 750 lux. The lower figure is the floor, the middle is the normal design target, and the upper applies where the work is finer or the space matters commercially enough to justify the extra load. That is more useful than a single number, because it tells you which way to move and why. A tile display where a customer is checking surface texture belongs at the upper end. A furniture floor, where the object is large and the decision is about shape, sits comfortably in the middle. Circulation needs neither. The same Indian code puts corridors and passageways at 50 to 150 lux, which is a fraction of the display level.<\/p>\n<p>That last point is the one that saves money. A number on a page is a target measured on a plane you choose. Two showrooms can both hit 500 lux and look nothing alike, because one measured on the floor and the other on the shelf face. Ask whoever designs your lighting which plane they calculated on. If they cannot answer, the number means little.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"cri-and-colour-temperature-and-why-products-look-wrong-at-ho\">CRI and colour temperature, and why products look wrong at home<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Colour rendering index describes how honestly a light source shows colour, measured against a reference on a scale topping out at 100. IS 3646 sorts sources into groups: above 90, between 80 and 90, between 60 and 80, and between 40 and 60, each matched to how much colour accuracy the space needs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The method behind the number is not a marketing invention. CIE 013.3-1995, the international publication that defines the technique, specifies a set of eight test colour samples used to calculate the general colour rendering index, with six further samples covering strong red, yellow, green and blue as well as skin and foliage tones. That detail matters commercially. A lamp can score well on the eight standard samples and still handle deep reds poorly, which is exactly the colour a fabric, paint or upholstery showroom cannot afford to get wrong. If red matters to what you sell, ask for the special index for the strong red sample, not just the headline figure.<\/p>\n<p>Colour temperature (how warm or cool the light looks, in Kelvin) is a separate property and people confuse the two constantly. The Indian illumination code sorts colour appearance into three classes: warm at or below 3300K, intermediate above 3300K and up to 5300K, and cold above 5300K. A warm source is not a low-quality source, and a cold source is not a more accurate one. Mixing colour temperatures across one sightline is what makes a showroom look unfinished. A customer will not say the fittings are 4000K on one wall and 3000K on the next. They will say the shop feels cheap, and you will never find out why.<\/p>\n<p>Keep one colour temperature per zone and hold it through replacements. Most colour drift in a two-year-old showroom is not fading. It is three different people buying replacement lamps from three different places.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-ecbc-allows-and-when-it-applies-to-you\">What ECBC allows, and when it applies to you<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The Energy Conservation Building Code sets limits on how much lighting power a commercial building may install. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency states it applies to new commercial buildings with a connected load of 100 kW or a contract demand of 120 kVA or more. Below that, it is guidance rather than a requirement.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is the part of showroom lighting design that owners discover late, usually when a consultant asks for a lighting load sheet. The threshold published by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency is the deciding line. A single showroom fit-out inside an existing building will often sit under it, while a showroom forming part of a larger new commercial development will not. Either way the code is worth designing to, because the limits are expressed as watts per square metre and a design that meets them is simply a design that is not wasting energy. The ECBC 2017 material published alongside the code puts retail and mall spaces in the region of 14 W per square metre, tightened from the 16 W per square metre allowed under the earlier 2007 edition.<\/p>\n<p>The Energy Conservation Building Code pushes controls rather than only fittings. It calls for automatic control systems across the great majority of interior lighting in buildings above 300 square metres, and ECBC requires occupancy sensors that switch lighting off after fifteen minutes of inactivity in much larger buildings above 20,000 square metres.<\/p>\n<p>Controls cost little and keep paying back every month, and most showrooms never specify them. A showroom lit at one level from opening to closing is paying display rates during the two hours a day when nobody is in the far corner. Zoned switching costs very little at first fix and almost nothing to run. Retrofitting it after the ceiling closes costs a great deal more, which is the argument for settling lighting during design rather than during handover. They are a ceiling grid set before the display layout was fixed, one colour temperature buying replacements from three suppliers, accent lighting used so widely it stops accenting, and no dimming or zoning, which leaves the shop paying full display rates all day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Almost every costly mistake in showroom lighting design is a sequencing problem. Ceilings get built early because they are on the critical path, and lighting positions get frozen with them. Then the display layout arrives, the racks land somewhere else, and every spot is now aimed at a gap. Nobody can see the mistake from a drawing. It only shows up on the floor, at which point moving a track costs a closed shop and a patched ceiling. The fix is unglamorous: fix where merchandise sits before you fix where the ceiling opens. Track systems help, because they let you re-aim without cutting, and they age better in a shop that changes its display every season.<\/p>\n<p>The second recurring error is heat and glare on reflective goods. Glass, gloss laminate, polished tile and chrome all bounce a source straight back into the eye. The Indian illumination code addresses this as glare restriction, judged on luminaire luminance in the critical angles between roughly 45 and 85 degrees. In plain terms, the customer should see the lit product, not the lamp.<\/p>\n<p>The third is a maintenance point that only appears in year two. Fittings that cannot be re-lamped or re-aimed without a specialist are a slow tax on a working shop. Ask that question before you buy, not after.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"showroom-lighting-design-in-hyderabad\">Showroom lighting design in Hyderabad<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Hyderabad showroom lighting has to deal with strong daylight on street-facing glass, long trading hours, and landlord limits on how much load a unit is allowed to draw. Those three constraints, not the design idea, usually decide the final lighting layout in Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills or Kondapur.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A shopfront on a wide arterial road in Banjara Hills or Somajiguda takes daylight that easily overwhelms a display designed for evening. The window that looks generous in a drawing becomes a mirror by afternoon, and the goods behind it vanish under reflections of the traffic. The answer is rarely more light. It is usually depth, shading and a display plane set back from the glass, plus a lighting circuit that can be pushed up for the daylight hours and pulled down after dark. Older retail streets such as Himayatnagar bring a different problem: narrow frontages, low slabs and existing electrical infrastructure that limits what you can add. In the newer developments around HITEC City, Madhapur and Kondapur, the constraint is usually the landlord fit-out guide, which may cap connected load per unit and dictate ceiling access.<\/p>\n<p>We work across these areas from our studio in Madhapur, and the pattern repeats. The showrooms that photograph well and trade well are the ones where the lighting was designed against the actual frontage orientation rather than against a mood board. Most of the widely quoted retail lighting uplift percentages have no published study behind them, and we will not repeat them. What can be stated plainly is that lighting decides whether a customer can see and correctly judge a product, and that colour rendering is a measured property tied directly to returns and complaints. Those are mechanisms you can check in your own shop.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<details>\n<summary>Can a lighting change fail an inspection?<\/summary>\n<p>Lighting work touches emergency and exit lighting, escape routes and electrical load, all of which sit within fire and life safety approvals. Adding load to an existing distribution board, or blocking or dimming an escape route, are the two ways a cosmetic lighting change turns into an approval problem. Keep the emergency lighting and exit signage circuits separate and untouched, and have the load checked before you buy fittings.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<details>\n<summary>How long does a showroom have to close for a lighting change?<\/summary>\n<p>It depends almost entirely on whether the ceiling has to open. Re-aiming and re-lamping an existing track system can often be done outside trading hours. Moving fixed downlights means cutting, patching, painting and dust control, which is a genuine shutdown. This is the strongest argument for choosing track over fixed points in any showroom that changes its display through the year.<\/p>\n<\/details>\n<details>\n<summary>Is LED always the right choice for a showroom?<\/summary>\n<p>For almost all new commercial fit-outs, yes, on load and maintenance grounds, and the direction of the Energy Conservation Building Code towards lower watts per square metre reinforces it. The caution is that LED quality varies widely on exactly the property showrooms need most.
