Nobody planned that queue. It was built in, months earlier, on a drawing where the equipment fitted but the people did not. Gym layout and equipment zoning is the part of a fit-out that quietly sets your capacity, your churn and your staffing, long before a single member walks in.<\/p>\n<p>This guide is for operators planning a new floor or reworking one that is not holding its members. They prove the equipment fits. A working gym floor plan proves that forty people can train at the same time without crossing each other, waiting for the same station, or standing where somebody is about to press a bar overhead.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Fitting is arithmetic. Flow is behaviour. The difference shows at peak hour, which for a Hyderabad studio usually means early morning and again from about six in the evening, when the room is crowded and least forgiving.<\/p>\n<p>Start from that hour and work backwards. How many people are in the room, and what are they doing at once? Where does someone entering go first, and does that path cut across a lifting area, a class, or a row of treadmills?<\/p>\n<p>Handled this way, gym layout and equipment zoning produces a different drawing from the one that starts with a list of machines. It usually needs fewer stations and more space between them, and it is the version that keeps members through their second year. What actually decides the number is peak concurrent users, your programme mix, and the working envelope each piece of kit needs around it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Total membership is close to meaningless as a planning input. A thousand names can behave like sixty people at once or a hundred and twenty, depending on pricing, class timetable and where those members live and work.<\/p>\n<p>So the calculation runs the other way. Estimate peak concurrent users from your own entry data, or from a comparable site if you have none. Then list every station, add its footprint, and add the envelope around it: the room a person needs to load a plate, step back or unrack a bar safely.<\/p>\n<p>Add circulation, then wet areas, reception and storage. You end up with a floor area driven by evidence rather than a borrowed ratio. When that number exceeds the unit you are viewing, cut stations rather than shrink envelopes.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"strength-and-cardio-zoning-keep-what-does-not-mix-apart\">Strength and cardio zoning: keep what does not mix apart<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Strength and cardio zoning is not about tidiness. The two behave differently: cardio is steady, solitary and long, while free weights are noisy, social and unpredictable in the space they take. Put them together and each one degrades the other.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cardio users want a view, airflow and some privacy. Free weight users want floor room, mirrors at the right angle and no traffic behind them. Machines sit between, and they carry much of the first-time membership, people who are not confident yet.<\/p>\n<p>A pattern that works in most units is a circulation spine with zones opening off it. Cardio takes the frontage or window line. Machines sit in the middle where they are easy to find and supervise. Free weights and platforms go to the back or one flank, close to structure that can carry them.<\/p>\n<p>Adjacency matters as much as separation. A stretching area beside the free weight bay gets used. Put it next to reception and it does not, because nobody wants to lie on the floor in front of arriving members. That decides whether a zone earns its space.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"nobody-should-walk-through-a-lift\">Nobody should walk through a lift<\/h2>\n<p><strong>A common layout fault is a walkway that crosses a training area. A member carrying a water bottle passes behind a lifter mid-set. Both break concentration, one steps back into the other, and staff spend their day managing something the drawing created.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Circulation should be readable without signage. From the entrance a first-time member should see where to change, where to start and where staff stand, without walking through anybody else&#8217;s set.<\/p>\n<p>Keep main routes continuous and free of pinch points at doors, columns and the ends of equipment rows. Where a route passes a training bay, put the buffer in the layout itself, not in a painted line, because paint stops working in the second week.<\/p>\n<p>Exit routes need equal discipline. Every member needs a clear path to a way out from wherever they are training, and that path cannot be blocked by a plate tree that migrated there over a month. There is a reason for both.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"zone-by-zone-what-each-area-really-needs\">Zone by zone: what each area really needs<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Zones fail when they are squeezed by exactly the amount that seemed harmless on a drawing. A metre off a platform bay, half a metre off a walkway, one extra machine in a row. Each looks small alone, and together they are what makes a room feel full at half capacity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The table below is how we run a survey conversation with an operator. Size the zone from what happens at peak, not from the equipment list a supplier sends. And check every boundary against a walking route, because most squeezed zones were squeezed by a walkway that had to go somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Leave one zone flexible as well. Programmes shift within two years, and an operator who can turn a machine row into class space without moving services keeps that change cheap.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"gym-ventilation-requirements-air-is-a-capacity-question\">Gym ventilation requirements: air is a capacity question<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Air handling is treated as a services item and it is really a layout item. People working hard produce heat, moisture and carbon dioxide, and a room that cannot clear them feels crowded well before it is full. Building services, including ventilation, sit under Part 8 of the National Building Code of India.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The useful thing about gym ventilation requirements is that you can measure whether you are meeting them. The Health and Safety Executive advises that carbon dioxide readings consistently above 1500 ppm in an occupied room indicate poor ventilation that needs acting on, which turns an argument into a reading on a cheap monitor.<\/p>\n<p>The same body offers a helpful conversion: around 1000 ppm corresponds to roughly 10 litres of fresh air per second per person, the supply rate it recommends for most workplaces. A training room with hard-working occupants is at the demanding end of that scale, not the easy end.<\/p>\n<p>Layout decides whether air actually arrives. Supply and extract need to reach crowded bays, not just the open middle of a room. Cardio rows throw off heat and often sit against a wall where nothing moves. Fixing that on a drawing is free. Fixing it after opening means ductwork through a finished ceiling.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ctabox\"><span class=\"eyebrow\">Working on a commercial space<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One team carries the drawing through to the finished room, so nobody is left waiting on somebody else.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta\" href=\"https:\/\/simfyrelive.in\/contact\">Plan your fit-out<\/a><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"light-people-can-actually-train-under\">Light people can actually train under<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Lighting decides how a space feels and whether a heavy set feels safe. IS 3646 Part 1 recommends 300 to 750 lux (a measure of how much light lands on a surface) for multi-purpose sports halls and puts them in the strictest class for limiting direct glare, which matters most where members lie on their backs under a loaded bar.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The standard also notes that a sports hall lighting system should be flexible enough for the variety of activities that happen in it, and that far higher levels, in the range of 1000 to 2000 lux, are needed only where television coverage is involved. For a normal commercial floor, that upper range is not your problem.<\/p>\n<p>Within that band, the number is a choice. A functional zone and a lifting bay want the brighter end so form is visible and plates readable. A stretching or recovery corner works better lower, and that contrast stops a large room feeling like a warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Glare is the part people skip. Bare downlights directly above a bench sit in the eyeline of anyone pressing, and every mirror in the room doubles whatever is wrong. Position luminaires relative to the equipment, not to a neat ceiling grid drawn before the layout was fixed.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"exits-occupant-load-and-the-fire-officer\">Exits, occupant load and the fire officer<\/h2>\n<p><strong>A gym is a place where people gather, so it is assessed accordingly. Part 4 of the National Building Code of India governs fire and life safety, including occupancy classification, occupant load (the number of people the space must safely hold), exit widths and travel distance (how far someone must walk to reach an exit) to an exit. Those figures come from the code and the local authority, not from a layout preference.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The practical consequence is simple. The number of people you may hold, and the routes they leave by, are settled by that code and your approval authority. A drawing has to serve those routes rather than negotiate with them.<\/p>\n<p>In Telangana the approval route also depends on the size of what you are building. TG-bPASS states that development above 500 square metres or exceeding 10 metres in height goes through the full single-window process rather than instant self-certification, so a larger unit is a longer programme and needs to be planned as one.<\/p>\n<p>Bring a fire consultant in at drawing stage, not at inspection. A layout reworked after equipment arrives costs far more than a review before anything is ordered, and it is among the easiest delays to avoid.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"layout-and-structure-are-one-conversation\">Layout and structure are one conversation<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Where the heavy equipment goes is a structural decision, not a styling one. IS 875 Part 2 sets the imposed load (the weight of people and equipment a floor must carry) for gymnasia at 4.0 kN per square metre and for assembly areas without fixed seats at 5.0, and few rented office or retail floors were designed with either figure in mind.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On an upper storey, racks, plate trees and drop zones concentrate weight onto small feet. Near beam lines and columns they are usually manageable. At the centre of the longest span they cause deflection and bounce that everyone feels, including the tenant underneath.<\/p>\n<p>Sound moves through structure too. The United Kingdom Approved Document E caps impact sound at 62 dB for purpose-built homes while setting airborne insulation separately at 45 dB, which is a reminder that a dropped bar and a loud playlist are two different problems with two different fixes.<\/p>\n<p>This is why layout, structure and services get settled together in one pass rather than in sequence. Deep, narrow plates with columns through the middle are common, and those columns decide your zones before you draw anything.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Peak hours here are shaped by the office day. In HITEC City and the Financial District the evening rush is sharp and late, and the morning slot is smaller than operators expect. In Jubilee Hills the pattern spreads wider, with more mid-morning and mid-afternoon use.<\/p>\n<p>That changes the plan. A sharp evening peak means you need more of your capacity available at once, which usually means fewer specialised stations and more that suit several uses. A spread pattern lets you programme classes through the day and get more out of a studio.<\/p>\n<p>Building constraints matter too. A tight service lift limits equipment size, a single stair limits how you route people, and a landlord may cap working hours. If you already have an architect and a fire consultant appointed, and simply need machines installed to a plan that is already fixed and approved, an equipment supplier will serve you better and cost you less.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are also not the right choice for a home gym or a residential space. Our work is commercial: showrooms, offices, bars and pubs, and training facilities.<\/p>\n<p>And if a unit is too small for the programme an operator wants to sell, we say so before the lease rather than draw a plan that only works on paper.
